Back: “Bess beetles, or Passalidae, are a family of insects that have an unusually sophisticated language to talk to one another and are rare in that they share the responsibility for looking after their young into adulthood. The North American species on the front of the card is called the Jerusalem beetle or Odontotaenius disjunctus. Bess beetles produce 14 distinct sounds by rubbing the undersides of their wings across their abdomens, a behavior known as stridulation. Unlike most insects who deposit their eggs and then leave, Bess beetles remain together as a pair, sharing feeding and defending responsibilities, to raise their young.”
