The first formal report of the use of tropical capsaicin for pain relief in the West appeared in 1850. It recommended burning or itching extremities be doused in an alcoholic hot pepper extract. Today creams, lotions and patches with low capsaicin levels are used for pain relief. Capsaicin blocks receptors on the surface of our cells thereby stopping the chain of events that stimulate pain-inducing nerves.”
