The glossy leaves and red berries of holly bring a festive cheerfulness to dark winter nights. In 2012 a study found that, although all holly leaves have the same DNA sequence, the DNA in some leaves is modified when animals graze on the plant, resulting in a prickly shape. The Victorians gave holly the emblem of ‘foresight’, as the prickly leaves at the bottom of the plant protect it from grazing deer and cattle. Look at the leaves above grazing height and you will see they are smooth. Holly was used to protect homes from evil spirits and wish friends and family good fortune in the year ahead.
